Barbershop society makes 7th Ave. sound great today

I know, I know, you think barbershop quartets are tragically unhip — and you’re probably right.

But these guys categorically embrace the old four-part harmony style of singing, and they could probably care less if the cool kids like it.

Thousands of members of the Barbershop Harmony Society are having their international convention here through Saturday.

And many of them gathered in front of the new society headquarters at 7th and Broad around 10 this morning for a group sing.

Here are some highlights that you’re gonna love.

Fer real.

Seen in the City: Miley Cyrus at Metro Center

Miley signs on the set

So, you know who this is. It’s Miley Cyrus! Here, she signs a guitar at the Metro Center where Brad tells me they are wrapping up filming of Hannah Montana, The Movie. Nice bonnet.

Brad Schmitt knows how jealous I am. Here I sit tip-typing away and adding little notes to evidence of his excellent adventures. I feel like some NASA geek tucked away in a closet while the Astronauts beam down extraordinary photos of Earth and Miley Cyrus sightings.

You know Miley loves her coffee, but check out what she had on the lunch menu yesterday:

Lemon-lime oven roasted chicken
Parmesan mashed potatoes
Smoked fillet mignon with béarnaise
Grilled fresh asparagus with garlic
Steamed broccoli
Baked croissants
Bread-crumb crusted, oven-roasted roma tomatoes
Grilled lobster tails with butter
Tofu couscous Mediterranean stir-fry
Saffron rice & black beans
Oyster on the half shell
Boiled shrimp
Fruit salad
Baby arugula salad with strawberries, feta cheese, cashews, and strawberry vinaigrette dressing
Sundried tomato & basil chicken salad tortilla wraps
Tiramisu
Assorted cheesecakes

Listen to your Heart: Rockers to play the Wildhorse

Heart (Crazy On You) are on tour playing big shows with Journey and Cheap Trick this summer.

But Ann and Nancy Wilson – pictured here with Fergie in a recent American Idol performance — will break off the tour for a special show Aug. 9 at the Wildhorse Saloon.

Heart has been around town quite a bit in the past few years, doing projects with Wynonna and Gretchen Wilson.

But Heart’s publicist says it was Nashville fans who insisted on the one-off show here.

That doesn’t mean one or two of Heart’s Nashville friends might not pop up at the Wildhorse show….

Bachelorette Deanna Pappas is ex-Graham Central server

Secrets revealed! I talked to The Bachelorette star Deanna Pappas this morning and — as usual — there’s always a Nashville connection.

Seems Deanna, 25, a Georgia girl, lived in Nashville for about five years, going to school at Austin Peay in Clarksville and Vol State in Gallatin.

How did the then-college girl earn money? By slinging drinks at Second Avenue party complex Graham Central Station, which features events like Babe Xtreme Bikini Contests and Battle of the Bands.

How did she not find love there?

“I was actually really young when I was in Nashville,” she explains, “so, nope, none of those relationships worked out for me.”

Deanna also talks about her tiff with Nashville contestant Jade on the last season of The Bachelor and she talks about finding a happy ending this time around.

Check — Andy Griffith was on Brad Paisley’s bucket list

Brad Paisley says Andy Griffith meant more to him growing up than many of the folks Brad actually knew. So Brad’s pretty thrilled that Andy is in Brad’s latest music video, for Waitin’ on a Woman.

“It’s one of the things I’ve had on my wish list of things to do,” Brad said in a statement.

“He has influenced my life more than most people that I grew up with — more than most people that I actually knew my whole life. I wrote Andy a letter telling him what he has meant to me over the years and asked him to be in the video.”

He said yes. She said “Wow.” I said “When?” She said “How ’bout right now?” Oops. Sorry. I was channeling Chad Brock for a second.

Andy plays Brad’s nice grandfatherly mentor in the video. It’ll make ya cry.

Mr. George Putnam attacks entertainment!

Yesterday, local blog J-Wo posted an ominous warning on the state of renewable entertainment sources.

Are we really going into an entertainment crisis? Over the past few year’s scientist’s have been speculating that by the year 2013,our renewable entertainment sources will be wiped out.

I didn’t take the warning seriously until I saw this missive launched on YouTube by Mr. George Putnam, outstanding news reporter.

I wonder which of one of our entertaining on-air programs has upset Mr. Putnam so much? Was it Sex and the City, Desperate Housewives, The Bachelorette or what? These attacks must stop!

I know it wasn’t this blog that lit his fuse. The closest MusicCityTV has gotten to what’s acceptable on-air here is “crap,” “hell,” and “damn.” Mr. Putnam certainly won’t find on this or any other station blog the level of adult content and situations that occur on a daily basis in our daytime and primetime on-air programming. This station’s blogs are practically the Gideons Bible of our media offerings. And people love it.

Miley Cyrus has had her California coffee flown in weekly

Put the words “Miley Cyrus coffee” in Google Images, and you’ll see dozens of pics of Miley clutching an iced coffee from an L.A.-based chain called Coffee Bean.

To be specific, Miley likes a “mocha caramel ice blended,” which, by the way, runs $3.50-$4.85.

Problem is, she can’t get that exact drink here, and Miley has been in middle Tennessee for

So what’s a girl to do? Why, bring California to Nashville, of course!

Miley apparently has had local movie caterers fly in all the ingredients from Coffee Bean headquarters each week.

Seen in the City: Miley Cyrus turns up at The Factory

Miley Cyrus popped up today at The Factory in Franklin, where the well-heeled Williamson Countians go for an upscale quaint country shopping experience. (Did I mention there’s a day spa in The Factory? Sniff sniff.)

Seems the Hannah Montana movie calls for Hannah to wander around to the stores, recalling memories that each evoked. (”Ooooooo, that dress store is where I got my prom dress….”)

But today, Miley wandered off script and jumped into an ice cream store and started serving scoops to little fans who had gathered.

Miley also spent 30 or 45 minutes at a pottery-making place.

And then she actually spent 10-15 minutes signing autographs for the tots, as seen here.

See there? She IS a good ol’ Tennessee girl.

Taylor Swift and Def Leppard to do joint CMT taping

Can you believe that?

You might be hip to the CMT Crossroads series, which pairs a country artist with a non-country artist. They’ve had John Fogerty with Keith Urban; Kelly Clarkson and Reba McEntire; Joss Stone and LeAnn Rimes; Robert Plant and Alison Krauss; and Maroon 5 and Sara Evans.

The latest pairing is young fresh Taylor Swift and the not-as-young (or fresh) Def Leppard (Pour Some Sugar On Me.)

“Every time I’ve seen Crossroads on CMT I’ve always thought, ‘If I ever get to do one of those, it HAS to be with Def Leppard!,’ so this is really a dream come true for me,” Taylor said in a statement.

“I have been screaming the words to Def Leppard songs for years…so it’s amazing that I’m going to get to share a stage with them this year!”

The taping will be here in October, and it debuts Nov. 8.

Reports: Rock singer exposes himself at Rocketown

From WKRN.com:

The lead singer of a local rock band is facing accusations he exposed himself to a crowd of teens and adults at a Nashville music venue.

Deborah Burnett, a security worker at Rocketown, was in the crowd Friday night during a performance by the Legendary Shack Shakers when lead singer Joshua Wilkes reportedly opened his pants and exposed his genitals.

Rocketown is a Christian-based teen entertainment complex that provides a safe, alcohol and drug free environment for youth to enjoy concerts, classes, videogames and skateboarding, according to its Web site.

Both teens and adults were the audience at the time of the alleged incident.

Burnett filed the complaint with police.
